Arc 2, Session 10, The Stone Archway
Didn't we just leave this party?

Our Journey began the 11th of Coldeven, 599 CY.
Last session it was the 19th of Wealsun, 599 CY.

Our Merry band consists of the following:

Elzedar the Rogue, of indeterminate race
Losien, elf rouge/wizard,
Tal4en, fraal psion,
Alexander of Port Toli, human swashbuckler,
Kitiana of Mystra, human cleric,
Alianna of Celene, olven wizard, and
Okono of Kundaxa, human, gamba fighter.

As Alexander stood in the doorway and struck at the nearest bravo, Losien’s half-dressed form tumbled into the room to strike at the other, and eventually followed him back through the glittering portal to it’s terminus, where he was instantly attacked by a pair of warlocks and more bravos. As the rest of the party crowded the door attempting to assist in freeing Kitiana, Losien was forced to retreat in time for Alianna to hurl a web into the far side of the portal at nearly the same time that Alexander finished off his one foe.

After recovering their equilibrium and being healed, Losien used a scroll to dimension door back to where he’d fought the warlocks, only to find the smoldering remains of Alianna’s web and an angry shopkeeper who seemed certain that Losien himself had been among those who’d come charging down his stairs a minute before, disturbing his patrons.

Having few leads to go on, Losien and Alianna elected to go off to the Mage Guild, both to join and to seek another scroll to aid in tracking down their assailants. Alexander had Kitiana lay down in his room, where he agreed to watch over her as she slept.

Meanwhile, downstairs in the Gryphon, Tal4en witnessed a pair of dark haired men in fancy red cloaks approach the innkeeper, ask a few questions, and then venture up the stairs. The two men went directly to Alexander’s room and began banging on his door, demanding to speak with him concerning an overdue loan.

When Kitiana spotted three more of these men watching their window from the street, Alexander finally surrendered to the inevitable and opened the door to these men, who produced an agreement with his signature that appeared to be genuine, though Alex had no memory of ever signing such a document. The men, who claimed to work for a moneylender named Venne, agreed to accompany Alex and Kitiana back to their boss, so that Alex could find out what this was all about, or at least work out a payment plan. Tal4en, who had wandered upstairs to ee what was happening, agreed to go out and seek the mages, and bring them up to speed on this latest development.

As Alex, Kitiana, and their escorts neared Venne’s offices, the streets became disturbingly deserted, and their escorts were just about to change course when the warlocks that Losien had fought earlier showed themselves, along with the the bravo who escaped through the portal and what appeared to be Losien himself. Alex and Kitiana tried to make a break for it, leaving their escorts to choose whether to stop them or fight this new threat, and their escorts tried to do both.

As the battle progressed, Venne’s enforcers fell to a combination of Alex’s rapier and eldritch blasts from the sorcerers. ‘Losien’ threw a poisoned dagger at Kitiana before falling to one of the escorts, and revealing himself as a doppelganger. Finally the last of Venne’s enforcers dropped, leaving a critically wounded Alex and a poisoned Kitiana facing the final two warlocks alone.

Kitiana summoned a celestial hippogriff and sent it to attack the nearest warlock, which it quickly killed. The final warlock decided to flee, leaving our pair of adventurers surrounded by bodies in a bad part of town… so they looted the bodies and flew back to the Gryphon on the hippogriff.

As we broke for the evening, the debate raged over whether they should simply break Okono out of jail and flee the city, or try and figure out who and how many different groups they seemed to have against them…

Shadows in the city

Our Journey began the 11th of Coldeven, 599 CY.
Last session it was still the 13th of Wealsun, 599 CY.

Our Merry band consists of the following:

Elzedar the Rogue, of indeterminate race (mongrel man)
Losien, elf rouge/wizard,
Tal4en, fraal psion,
Alexander of Port Toli, human swashbuckler,
Kitiana of Mystra, human cleric,
Alianna of Celene, olven wizard, and
Okono of Kundaxa, human, gamba fighter.

After a tense battle with eight of the Black Rook Irregulars, the party managed to charm their sergeant and send another two fleeing into the hills. Losien interrogated the man, learning that the mercenary camp of approximately 750 (50 spellcasters) was awaiting the arrival of another force of 200 or so men, after which they’d be setting out north across the Nyr Dyv for the Bandit Kingdoms. Janus Tandover and his forces appeared to be in the pay of one of the Hierarchs of the fallen Horned Society, who with aid from the Priests of Mabelrode, were making a bid to retake their nation from the Empire of Iuz.

Somehow their prisoner managed to shake off his enchantment and flee into the night, only to be slain by Losien in his attempt. Deciding that Janus was too well protected amidst his army, the group reluctantly decided to return to Greyhawk.

Once back in the city, they returned to their rooms at the Crippled Gryphon. Alianna caught Losien going through her pack, and he revealed to her that he was placing a golden ring he had crafted there for her to find. The two elves spent the rest of the evening sipping fey wine together and growing closer.

As Alexander’s remorse at having to allow Janus to live fueled a good drunk, Okono’s attempt to get him to lay off the sauce prompted an altercation with a nearby patron that quickly escalated into the death of said patron. Okono fled the scene of the murder, but was quickly captured by the City Guard and jailed.

The next morning, Alexander and Kitiana went to the boy’s father, one Kulkir Warfage, a local magistrate and wealthy shipping magnate. Offering first to pay to have the boy raised (he’d already been) and then to share information about Tandover’s operation to the southeast, Kitiana detected that Lord Warfage already knew Tandover’s name, but was pretending not to. Ultimately, nothing was decided regarding Okono’s fate, though the magistrate did agree to think about the matter.

On their way back to the Gryphon, Kitiana noticed someone following her and Alexander. Once back int heir quarters, Kitiana went into her room to lay down, while Alexander stood watch in the hall. Soon after, a strange noise from inside her room caused Alex to kick in the door, revealing to leather garbed bravos in the act of lifting Kitiana’s unconscious form, a glittering dimension door at their backs…

A Night at the Inn...

Our Journey began the 11th of Coldeven, 599 CY.
Last session began on the 21st of Flocktime, 599 CY.

Our Merry band consists of the following:

Elzedar the Rogue, of indeterminate race (mongrel man)
Losien, elf rouge/wizard,
Tal4en, fraal psion,
Alexander of Port Toli, human swashbuckler,
Kitiana of Mystra, human cleric,
Alianna of Celene, olven wizard, and
Okono of Kundaxa, human (touv), gamba fighter.

While on leave in Gradsul, Trogdor left the group abruptly, announcing that he was seeking his own lands on foot, no longer caring much for sea travel. Okono, the touv they’d rescued from Neutella’s island, decided to throw in his lot with that of the party, come what might.

Kitiana, while meditating, received a vision from Mystra, in which she viewed a stone archway beyond which a dead city could be seen. A bard named Rodolfo told her that she was the most ravishing beauty he’d ever seen, and that the arch in her dreams might well be called the celestial Arch, a Holy site to Celestian. His friend Nethin, a dwarf from the Flinty Hills, might know more, having been among those who first rediscovered it some years ago.

Given Kitiana’s divinely inspired information, the party in general began to think less of aiding Captain Morgan in her quest, and more upon their own futures and fortunes. Plans were made to leave Gradsul for the Flinty Hill’s.

An elf named Losien, sporting a Harper pin, approached the group at an inn one night, and introduced himself to Kitiana, stating that he’d been sent to watch over and assist her. Though suspicious at first, both she and the group eventually decided to allow him to join the party.

When the group elected to set out north for the Flinty Hills by way of Greyhawk, Alexander began making inquiries about Janus Tandor, the man who had slain his fiancee so many years ago. Hearing that he’d been gathering mercenaries in and about the region, Alexander resumed his inquiries once they reached the city itself, learning that he and his forces were camped out in the Cairn Hills.

Riding into the Cairn Hills, the group soon encountered a force of mercenaries displaying the Tandover crest, that being a Black Raven (or Rook) upon a field of brown. When we broke for the evening, the party and the mercenaries were in the midst of a battle, which either side could still emerge victorious from…

Maybe we should leave, before she gets back?

Our Journey began the 11th of Coldeven, 599 CY.
Last session it was still the 7th of Flocktime, 599 CY.

Our Merry band consists of the following:

Elzedar the Rogue, of indeterminate race (mongrel man)
Trogdor, thark barbarian
Selinidar, highborn kencyr unfettered
Alexander of Port Toli, human swashbuckler
Kitiana of Mystra, human cleric, and
Alianna of Celene, olven wizard.

We left our band of rogues interrogating a strange, gray creature they found bound in the workshop of the mansion. Trogdor recognized the creature as belonging to the race that ruled over his own people, and argued against including it in the party to no avail.

The search for the Frog led them back into the main gallery, where the mistress of the house set more of her troll-like guards and unnatural hounds. When the group seemed likely to defeat all of these guards, Neutella herself returned to the balcony, fireballed the group, and nearly charmed Trogdor into finishing his companions, but he threw off her spell and slew her instead… almost. She dissolved into mist and drifted away, revealing herself to be a vampire.

A search of the house revealed the Ruby Frog, several dozen gaudy trinkets, a pair of wands, and a nearly blood-drained warrior of Touv descent. Selinidar was located as well; pale, nearly drained of blood himself, trapped behind a wall of force that sealed off the mistress’ personal quarters.

The party returned to their ship, leaving Selinidar to his fate, escaping before Neutella could regroup her forces, taking the unknown Touv along with them. Two weeks later, the Silver Gull made port in Gradsul once more, with the Captain quickly leaving the ship to make a rendezvous with her unknown buyer…

For the love of a woman...

Our Journey began the 11th of Coldeven, 599 CY.
Last session it was the 7th of Flocktime, 599 CY.

Our Merry band consists of the following:

Elzedar the Rogue, of indeterminate race (mongrel man)
Trogdor, thark barbarian
Selinidar, highborn kencyr unfettered
Alexander of Port Toli, human swashbuckler
Kitiana of Mystra, human cleric, and
Alianna of Celene, olven wizard.

When we left our merry band, they were were standing in a clearing near a large mansion that sat surrounded by trees at the center of an oddly proportioned island. Distances all seemed mixed up; too many steps to the surface, and the top of the island too wide. A soft breeze carried the stench of the bodies of decaying wizards from the patio of the mansion, were they were likely slain by the two statues guarding the door.

As the group approached the patio, Trogdor picked up and threw Selinidar onto the walkway; and he immediately scrambled off, but not before drawing the attention of the statues, one of which promptly attacked him. Having awakened the statues, the rest of the group got into the act, and they soon destroyed the constructs, which seemed powered by steam (and exploded when finally destroyed). After the Captain picked the lock on the door, the party made their way inside.

Within they found themselves in a large entry hall, where they found four more statues. Two depicted adults, and two children; the children’s statues had dates carved into them that indicated they had dies nearly 50 years past. The first room they checked revealed a servant, who bade them return to the entry and await her Mistress.

After a few minutes, another servant led them into another room, fed them hour’derves and cocktails. Soon thereafter, Nuetella, mistress of the house, joined them. Selinidar fell in love with her, hard.

During the course of the ensuing conversations, Nuetella insisted that she had no knowledge of the frog the Captain sought, spoke of her children’s unfortunate end at the hands of a mis-summoned fiend, and spoke of her late husband’s lineage through the House of Drax. Though Selinidar was reluctant to leave, Nuetella told him to go with his friends, assuring him that she knew he would return when he could.

Once out of sight of the mansion, the Captain took more readings with her crystal, and reassured the group that the prize she sought was, indeed, located within the mansion. After a bit of brainstorming, the group elected to allow Selinidar to return, after having him promise to unlock the back door of the mansion to allow them access.

Selinidar returned to Nuetella, and, during the course of their dinner together, found an excuse to do as he had promised. While she entertained him upstairs, the group crept through the back door, and soon let themselves into the magical laboratory nearby.

Within they found several trained attack dogs and a strange, gangly gray creature strapped into a rack. A large guard soon joined the fray, but all the defenders were soon put down and the strange creature freed from his restraints.

As we left for the night, the group was licking their wounds and preparing to question the unknown creature as to why it had been thus restrained…

There came a monkey...

Our Journey began the 11th of Coldeven, 599 CY.
Last session it was the 19th of Planting, 599 CY.

Our Merry band consists of the following:

Elzedar the Rogue, of indeterminate race (mongrel man)
Trogdor, thark barbarian
Selinidar, highborn kencyr unfettered
Alexander of Port Toli, human swashbuckler
Kitiana of Mystra, human cleric, and
Alianna of Celene, olven wizard.

When we left our merry band, they were at sea repelling boarders from a sloop flying the colors of the Lordship of the Isles. After a heated skirmish, they prevailed, and sailed a few days later into the port of Scant.

While in the city, the group split up on their separate errands, the only one of which that bears mentioning is Trogdor’s quest to burn the head of the pirate’s mate he had slain. While the guards tried to dissuade him from the more civilized sections of town, eventually the guards agreed (for a price) to escort him to the city limits so he could dispose of his… prize. While passing through the fields surrounding the city, he drew some attention, and by nightfall a group of peasants armed with pitchforks and torches were hard on his heels, sending him back to the city… Equally enterprising guards allowed him back into the city after nightfall for a suitable donation to their retirement funds.

After a few more days in port, the ship eventually set sail for an unnamed island to the north, in the middle of the Sea of Gearnat. The island itself projected from the sea like the peak of Devil’s Tower, it’s surface 150 yards above sea level, and perhaps 300 yards in diameter. Circling the island revealed a cave below the waterline, which, at low tide, revealed a dock and stairs cut into the stone leading upwards…

After climbing far more stairs than anyone felt should have led a mere 150 yards up, the party reached the top of the cone, and found themselves in a jungle. Kitiana cast a spell on a nearby monkey named Phil, whose charming repartee led Alianna to make him her familiar. Phil eventually led the group to the ‘Manse’, whose courtyard held the bodies almost two dozen dead wizards, and a doorway flanked by a pair of large stone statues…

All this for some frogs?

Our Journey began the 11th of Coldeven, 599 CY.
Last session it was (still) the 25th of Coldeven, 599 CY

Our Merry band consists of the following:

Elzedar the Rogue, of indeterminate race (mongrel man)
Trogdor, thark barbarian
Selinidar, highborn kencyr unfettered
Alexander of Port Toli, human swashbuckler
Kitiana of Mystra, human cleric, and
Alianna of Celene, olven wizard.

Unseen by the group as it concentrated on it’s foes, Kitiana’s uncle, who had been scrying on the group, sent help in the form of a large, green-skinned thark. Said thark arrived in the shallows of the river, and charged into the fray ululating his war cry.

As the newly revitalized party finished off their Scarlet foes, the robed creature who had come to their aid disappeared back into the temple’s crypts. The party took two captives, both of whom Trogdor kept suspended in midair as Kitiana made introductions. One attempted to escape when Trogdor threw him against the wall, and he took the group’s distraction at his companion’s answers to open the door to the upper levels of the temple. A few quick crossbow/arrow shots brought him down before he reached the stairs, though.

From the second, they learned that the Scarlet Brotherhood held all the lands of the Amedio as their protectorate, and that they had bases and forts all along the coast. You also learned that the temple had been taken over by a renegade Brotherhood wizard named Traegok, who specialized in Transmutation and Crossbreeding. Several of his ‘creations’ were known to still survive in the upper portions of the temple.

Once revived, the Captain admitted that she and Darros knew one another, but were not related; Sister was a term of respect among the Brotherhood, and she and he had clashed in her quest before. The second captive was eventually thrown into the river, and while swimming away, shot twice with crossbow bolts; when last seen, he had submerged; it is unknown whether he survived.

Returning to the crypts, the party spent several hours searching before finding the hidden chamber where the object their Captain sought was to be found; but none of the arty, including the Captain, had the skill to unlock the box in which it was stored. Their quarry in hand, they set out back to the surface, following the river in search of their boat.

Several miles downstream they found it, half sunk and washed up among some logs; the Brotherhood had holed it before they’d set it adrift. After spending most of the day walking, they finally reached the coast, signaled the ship, and set course north for Gradsul, in Keoland. Captain Morgan, after a few days at sea, revealed the prize they’d taken to Alianna – a lustrous sculpture of a frog crafted from jacinth, about the size of a cantaloupe.

Another six days at sea brought you to Gradsul on the 4th of Growfest, the middle of the Spring holiday week. Most of the ship’s crew decamped on leave, and the party joined them in the port, joining in the celebrations and spending the wealth they’d obtained abroad. Elzedar joined the local thieves guild, and fenced some of their loot, while Selinidar, Alianna, and Kitiana were invited to a fancy Ball at the estate of Baron Tarly. As the night proceeded, Selinidar got lucky with the gorgeous widow Maruleen, Kitiana danced the night away win the Baron’s nephew, Julian, and Alianna spent the evening with Lord Gerold of Celene, a countryman of hers.

The ship finally left Gradsul on the 4th of Planting, bound for Scant in Onnwal. Several other ships were sighted along the way, and some gave chase but were avoided, but eventually a swift sloop flying the colors of Lordship of the Isles caught up to you and succeeded in boarding you. Prior to this action, Alexander informed the party that the Lordship’s lands, much like his own nation of the Sea Princes had been defeated by the Brotherhood in the wars nearly a decade back, but it was widely rumored that the Lordship was ruled by puppets of the Brotherhood even still.

As we left our valiant party, they were repelling boarders at sea, still three days out of Scant…

Death by Honor

Our Journey began the 11th of Coldeven, 599 CY.
Last session it was (still) the 25th of Coldeven, 599 CY

Our Merry band consists of the following:

Elzedar the Rogue, of indeterminate race (mongrel man)
Akahito of the Dragon, human samurai
Selinidar, highborn kencyr unfettered
Alexander of Port Toli, human swashbuckler
Kitiana of Mystra, human cleric, and
Alianna of Celene, olven wizard.

After defeating the undead, the group continued to explore the hidden chambers where they’d found them, and in addition to the well crafted furniture they’d found the week before, they found two gold plated sarcophagi, and some ancient flint headed weapons.

Further explorations of the crypt were cut short when Elzedar encountered a strange creature that resembled nothing so much as a humanoid-shaped gibbering mouther, dressed in ornate robes. Upon learning of this creature’s approach, the rest of the group quickly exited the crypts, and set up camp in the main worship area of the temple, where they laid up until everyone was fully healed and had their lost levels restored. Before retiring, however, they learned that someone had cut their boat free of it’s mooring while they’d been in the crypts below…

During the night, Alianna had a strange dream that featured the creature that had been described by Elzedar. In her dream the creature spoke to her in a hundred voices, only one of which she understood. It warned her that the Scarlet Brotherhood knew of their presence here, and that they should beware.

When the group finally emerged into the afternoon sun, they found a group of Scarlet Brotherhood monks awaiting them on the promenade, the leader of which addressed Captain Morgan as ‘sister’. He casually dismissed the nonhumans and foreigners as mongrels, which drew Akahito’s ire, and he challenged the leader to a duel.

Though Akahito struck a nearly mortal blow with his first strike, a flurry of blows the Brotherhood monk responded with knocked Akahito unconscious. While Kitiana ministered to Akahito’s wounds, the monk and the captain continued their verbal duel, and when the monk struck her and knocked her unconscious, the group surged into combat with the monks who had them surrounded.

During the course of this battle, Akahito was slain by the leader, but his followers continued to outnumber the party, and used their greater numbers to box the party in and slowly but surely wear them down. As the curtain fell on the night, the strange robed figure that the group had seen in the crypts emerged into the light, stunning many with it’s gibbering, and ensnaring four of the monks with tentacles that leapt from the sleeves of it’s robe…

Down in the Crypts

Our Journey began the 11th of Coldeven, 599 CY.
Last session it was the 25th of Coldeven, 599 CY

Our Merry band consists of the following:

Elzedar the Rogue, of indeterminate race (mongrel man)
Akahito of the Dragon, human samurai
Selinidar Knorth, highborn kencyr unfettered
Alexander of Port Toli, human swashbuckler
Kitiana of Mystra, human cleric, and
Alianna of Celene, olven wizard.

After some small debate, the group elected to enter the complex via the central door. After passing through several long hallways, they entered what was once the grand worship chamber for the temple, but examination of the room showed that it had been converted by some mage into a laboratory for the crossbreeding of animals. By all evidence, the last such experiment had broken free, and wrecked the place.

Further explorations of this level revealed that the last priests had been killed and left to rot in their private chambers; Selinidar gathered their jeweled bracelets for later disposal. Deeming this part of the complex a bust, the group opened the door to the left, and followed another long hallway to some stairs…

The last few steps seemed to be guarded by a fresco of a faceless centaur armed with a kind of glaive; Elzedar neatly avoided the trap at the foot of the stairs and deactivated it. After searching the Halls of the Dead for a few minutes, Alianna spotted a secret door, which again, Elzedar narrowly opened yet closely avoided the trap.

Once on the other side of the trap door, the group encountered a large number of skeletons led by a pair of wights. Kitiana turned them once, allowing the group to discover a collection of masterwork cabinetry, but soon returned and gave a good fight, draining both Akahito and Selinidar of a level each. The undead fought fiercely, but soon succumbed to the party’s swords, spells, and Kitiana’s strange, silvery bolts of energy…

Meanwhile, aboard the Silver Gull...

GM’s note: the current campaign is an “extension” of a campaign I ran back in 2006, involving many of the same players, forces, and objectives as the current campaign. As events unfold in the 2014 campaign, I will be posting the events of the 2006 campaign, as there will be some overlap in villains and goals. I quit keeping a proper campaign log at some point, but there’s at least a year or more’s worth of “campaign updates” to be salvaged. The 2006 campaign was, of course, equal parts 3.x and Arcana Evolved, so that will explain some of the character classes in use. To help differentiate, 2014 updates will be “Episodes” while the 2006 updates are “Sessions”, and of course both will be tagged as either 2014 or 2006, as necessary.

This campaign was set in the same world as an even earlier campaign from 2000, using the RuneQuest system and copious house rules. I just found a folder full of the complete printouts from that campaign, so look for updates for that as well.

Our Journey begins: the 11th of Coldeven, 599 C.Y.

Our Merry band consists of the following:

Elzedar the Rogue, of indeterminate race (mongrel man)
Akahito of the Dragon, human samurai
Selinidar Knorth, highborn kencyr unfettered
Alexander of Port Toli, human swashbuckler
Kitiana of Mystra, human cleric, and
Alianna of Celene, olven wizard.

Finding themselves all looking for a new ship, our band joins the crew of the Silver Gull in Port Toli, in the Hold of the Sea Princes, serving as marines under Captain Allison Morgan.

After several days of becoming accustomed to their new ship and taking on cargo, the Gull sets sail due south across the Jerlea Bay for the Amedio with a cargo of beads and bronze axe, spear, and arrowheads.

On reaching the coastline, the Gull sailed due east, until a signal fire was spotted along the beach. Anchoring offshore, the party and the 1st mate of the ship (Arox Pfett, a human) made landfall in one of the ship’s boats loaded with several cases of trade goods.

After awhile, an agreement was reached with the Olmans (the trade goods exchanged for gold bracelets and other jewelry), Captain Morgan came ashore and was seen talking with one of the older natives and drawing pictures in the sand. After they were finished, Alianna examined their drawings and determined that they had sketched a river delta somewhere to the east, and that ‘something’ was to be found on the eastern shore of that river some miles upstream.

That night, after taking the ship a few miles further offshore, Alianna and Alexander’s watch was interrupted by nearly two score sahuagin who swarmed over the rail; Alianna’s timely sounding of the alarm was later cited as one of the main reasons the ship and company were saved, though at one point during the battle a strange, silvery light bathed Alianna, Kitiana, and the pair of sahuagin they were fighting in the prow of the ship.

After securing the ship even further offshore, the Silver Gull set sail again the next morning, reaching the river delta Alianna had seen in the sand the night before. Morgan and Pfett argued about how far upriver the Gull could safely sail, and finally Captain Morgan asked the party to accompany her in one of the ship’s boats when they had gone as far inland as the 1st mate dared take the ship.

After rowing nearly 12 miles upstream, the party encountered the ruins of an ancient temple devoted to some sort of native bat-god. The stairs of the temple led directly into the river, and there was even stone pilings for them to secure their boat to. Inside the temple’s canopy, they encountered five massive piles of human skulls, the most recent of which still seemed to have a bit of flesh clinging to the bone. Insects of all sorts made these mounds their home, as well.

Frescoes on the wall told the history of the region, including one set of panels that indicated that a group of the bat-god’s followers had turned away and followed a snake god who led them in acts of depravity; they were condemned by all the gods and forced to slither away on their bellies before the lands they held could be reclaimed by loyal followers of the bat god once again.

As we ended the evening, Elzedar was checking one of the three massive stone doors for traps…
