RQ Evening 03
Almost down the drain...

it is the 19th of Coldeven, 576 CY

Lucian (NPC) human initiate and junior Knight of Pelor;
Dracon, human initiate of Obad Hai, Beastmaster of the Wegwier;
Ivan, Suloise initiate of Norebo, psionicist, and appraiser of quality goods (Duchy of Umst);
Kaganost, wemic apprentice shaman, originally from Hepmonaland;
Kalik, halfling initiate of Avoreen (Duchy of Umst);
Milik, halfling sorcerer (he wasn’t always a halfling, though…)(Duchy of Umst/Nyrond);
Murray, nalshavel orc wizard,
Torias, avariel apprentice hawk shaman, exiled ducal heir of an unnamed avariel city high in the Yatils

As the evening commenced, it was the 19th of Coldeven, and the group was finishing their training and beginning to think once again of travel and adventure. With their sights set on Greyhawk City, Torias and a few companions ran into Lucien while looking to sign on as caravan guards, and he informed them of his current plight.

It would seem that while in Veluna, he received word that a friend of his in Greyhawk city, one Lord Myron Henway, had lost a caravan to a bandit attack, with which his son and daughter-in-law had been along traveling to Hardby. The bandits were offering to ransom the young couple back to Lord Henway, but after several years of caravan raids, Lord Henway was willing to pay a group of adventurers the sum of his son & daughter-in-law’s ransom if they would both rescue the pair and deal the bandits a sharp check – whatever wealth the party could obtain from the bandit’s lair was fair game, in addition to the ransom.

Their travel to the city was uneventful, except for a stop along the way to view the bones of two hill giants who had been slain near the city two summers before (an aside to the prior campaign most of my group had been a part of). Once ensconced in the Green Dragon Inn to await Lord Henway, however, Ivan had a ran in with an old flame of his named Melisande and her new beau, Rufus. At one point, Ivan told Rufus that he was welcome to Melisande, which sent Melisande running out the door in tears. Ivan refused to be dragged into a confrontation with Rufus at that time, but prudently declined to venture outside in the dark (Rufus being a somewhat shady character, whose professed line of work was “personnel readjustment” (i.e. assassin).

The group met with Lord Henway sometime afterwards, and agreed to take on a commission to rescue his son & daughter-in-law, and to bloody the bandits in the process. They made arrangements to ride out the next day with a competitors caravan, hoping that it would be the next target.

As the party retired for the evening, Ivan was struck in the chest by a crossbow bolt while closing the shutters on his window, and was knocked unconscious by the poison on it. The sound of his body hitting the floor drew Kalik to investigate (as he figured that something of the sort might occur), followed shortly by several other members of the party (except for Torias, who had flown off to the temple of Celestian, seeking answers to a half-buried memory from his past). Murray administered first aid to Ivan, closing the crossbow wound, and Dracon worked his magic, neutralizing most of the venom still in Ivan’s system.

The next day dawned with Torias notifying the Watch of the attack on Ivan the night before, and Ivan’s consternation at having the Watch pay him a visit (thankfully neither of the Watchmen recognized him…) Once everyone completed their purchases for the road, the party set out to catch up with the caravan, as it wound it’s way south towards Hardby.

Approximately two days out, while passing through some low hills, the caravan was struck by a hail of arrows, and when Torias flew up to gauge the enemy forces, he saw twenty archers (most of whom found the winged elf an exciting target). Half the caravan guards and most of our party rode up the hill to engage the archers, but once they achieved the crest of the hill, another twenty horsemen came over the hill on the other side of the caravan, and began to make short work of the remaining defenders.

Lucien called upon the rest of the party to follow him in retreat from the carnage, as it was their mission to rescue Lord Henway’s son, etc., not trade their lives for a caravan they were only riding with. (I ruled that the recovery of the young couple outweighed taking on 2-1 odds at a disadvantage in his mind).

Dracon and Milik continued to keep the bandit’s plunder of the caravan under observation, and once they departed, the rest of the party rode up to arrange a funeral pyre for the dead (this Lucien would not be talked out of). Once alight, the party put as much distance between it and themselves as they could without losing the bandit’s trail…

Once they made camp in a grove of trees several miles away, Torias watched as Ivan went slightly up a nearby hill, to relieve himself behind some rocks. When Ivan’s head suddenly vanished, Torias was the first to arrive and assist him in exiting the large hole that had opened up beneath him. As the other party members turned to see what the commotion was about, only Murray and Kaganost had night vision good enough to detect the large, inky-black form that began issuing from the hole. As it drew itself up and out, it took on the outline of a 20’ tall cloaked figure, which soon began to outstretch it’s arms (at which point, a fair percentage of the group, who had been alerted to it’s presence by the behavior of Murray and Kaganost, began showing it their heels) and then suddenly leapt into the air and flew off to the north.

When the group finally reassembled itself the next morning and investigated the hole, they could see a stone floor and arching stone walls beneath them, but little else. It was decided that the spot would be marked on their map for the future, but that locating the bandit’s hideout was paramount,.,,

…and so ends another evening,,.

RQ Evening 02
Not safe in Safeton...

576 CY

Dracon, human initiate of Obad Hai, Beastmaster of the Wegwier;
Ivan, Suloise initiate of Norebo, psionicist, and appraiser of quality goods (Duchy of Umst);
Kaganost, wemic apprentice shaman, originally from Hepmonaland;
Kalik, halfling initiate of Avoreen (Duchy of Umst);

We rejoin our circus troupe in the city of Safeton, where they had been attempting to ride out the winter. As Needfest approaches, men of the Watch, stationed along the southern and western roads to the city begin to disappear, and when patrols are reinforced, several are found slain by spear-thrusts delivered by creatures presumably smaller than a man.

One night, an actual spear point (severed from the shaft) is recovered beneath one of the bodies, but Ivan refuses to examine it with his psychometry, so most of the group decides to stake out the South Road and look for trouble (Ivan remains behind in the city, losing money at gambling but getting lucky with the ladies). As soon as Celene drifts behind some clouds, a group of goblins steals out of the nearby woods and begins approaching the city. The group decides to hide in a smaller patch of trees between the goblins and the city (which works out, because the goblins were heading there, anyway).

Shrugging off the arrows the party lets fly, the goblins close to melee range and, upon sighting Murray the nalshavel, let off a ululating cry that summons a larger force of ores and goblins from the distant woods. Besieged by seven opponents, Murray is soon unconscious and bleeding to death, while Milik the sorcerer, who has climbed a tree for a better vantage, fumbles his casting roll and winds up falling out of the tree and breaking his leg (GM note – the player of this character is continuing a trend that began in a previous campaign, where he was always getting legs smashed, cut off, or broken).

Under pressure of overwhelming odds, the party decides to bug out, Kaganost the wemic dragging the bodies of Murray and Milik along (since he is easily the strongest and fastest member of the party). Toriesh, who had been harrying the goblins with hand-crossbow bolts and flaming oil from above warns the city Watch of the oncoming horde, and the party reaches the relative safety of the city well ahead of the goblins and ores.

The city Watch and militia handled the bulk of the remaining orcs + goblins, but suggested that the party should winter anywhere but Safeton. Ivan’s failure at fast talking the city fathers into letting them remain ‘just a bit longer’ earns him a night in jail, while the rest of the group manages to hook up with a caravan heading north to Dyvers. Signing on as guards, they meet the captain of the caravan guards, a young Knight of Pelor named Lucien. (Somewhere before this point, they discovered that the mage who had wiped their memories of the past three months had overlooked Greykhan’s wolf familiar – it related the events to them (albeit from a dog’s point of view) mostly confirming their belief that their adventure had taken them somewhere inside the Pomarj. The only ‘vital’ information they discovered is that the object of their quest had been what looked like a rat’s skull on a leather thong, with emeralds for eyes….)

In any case, while traveling north along the Selintarn, they hear stories concerning the recent troubles suffered by the followers of Kelanen, and were well impressed by their fellow guardsmen’s opinion of Lucien’s fighting prowess. At one point, overhearing their fireside discussions of the recent months, Lucien revealed that he had heard of Marcus (of Cryllor), and that by all accounts, he was a well respected sorcerer and a man of honor. This of course had little effect on the opinions of most of the party, who for various reasons either want nothing further to do with Marcus (or want hot revenge…).

Upon reaching Dyvers at last, the group settled in for the rest of the winter, studying, training, and whatnot. Ivan attempted to make contact with the Guild of Appraisers in Dyvers (better known as the Fence’s Guild, a subsidiary of the Thieves Guild…), and was eventually contacted by Zorast of the Rhenee, who had a use for his ‘special’ talents. By way of reward for his services, Ivan chose to accept training from one of Zorast’s ‘granddaughters’, a comely lass named Nola….

And so ended another evening

RQ Evening 01
Beginnings, almost...

Our cast of characters includes:

576 CY
Dracon, human initiate of Obad Hai, Beastmaster of the Wegwier;
Ivan, Suloise initiate of Norebo, psionicist, and appraiser of quality goods (Duchy of Umst);
Kaganost, wemic apprentice shaman, originally from Hepmonaland;
Kalik, halfling initiate of Avoreen (Duchy of Umst);
Milik, halfling sorcerer (he wasn’t always a halfling, though…)(Duchy of Umst/Nyrond);
Murray, nalshavel orc wizard
Torias, avariel apprentice hawk shaman, exiled ducal heir of an unnamed avariel city high in the Yatils

The evening began with the characters, only some of whom were familiar with one another, sitting down together at a tavern in Greyhawk City to listen to the proposal of a mage who gave his name as Marcus concerning the retrieval of some trinket; they remember agreeing to a non-disclosure agreement, then suddenly their positions changed (different seating, different tavern, everybody in slightly different garb, autumn has turned to winter, etc.) and Marcus is thanking them for their quick work while one of his bodyguards distributes their pay. He quickly sashays out, leaving the bewildered group wondering exactly what has happened.

Examining their equipment, each seems to have acquired a minor magical item of one sort or another, and questioning the bartender reveals that they are now in Safeton, and have been for several days. Ivan uses his psychometry on several of the items the party has collected, determining that most of the prior owners of these items were goblins (minor spell matrices in every case). The only two items obviously not of goblin manufacture are an ivory wand useful in casting sorcery and a patch of human (?) skin with a large black bird tattoo (possession of the tattoo allows the user to cast a vision enhancing spell on himself).

(Jokes flew around the table regarding the infamous ‘Head of Vecna’ at this point… but nobody seemed over willing to try and graft the patch of skin onto themselves).

Ivan managed to fumble his psychometry roll while examining the piece of skin, and is temporarily very paranoid whenever he sees more than 2 crows or ravens together in any one place.

Deciding that powerful magic had been used to obscure their memories of the past, they sought out the priests of Wee Jas, who couldn’t do much more than confirm their suspicions that their memories of certain events had, indeed, been wiped away. The temple graciously accepted their donations and sent them on their way.

(This pretty much wrapped up the evening, as we spent about an hour finishing characters and spending starting funds; I fully expected dice projectiles when after agonizing over how to spend their money, I hand them more five minutes into the game).
